The Fall and Rise of Peter Stoller (Peter Stoller) By M. Pepper Langlinais

51O5IZtGvPL

The Fall and Rise of Peter Stoller is a superbly crafted espionage thriller that is set in London in the 1970s where intelligence tricks such as, pseudonyms, dead letter-boxes, and secret passwords were used along with a great number of code breaking technologies.  The story follows main protagonist, Peter Stroller, who is a British Intelligence Officer and next in line to run the Agency – until he falls in love with a cab driver, Charles, and his life goes off the rails.

In summary, “The Fall and Rise of Peter Stoller” is an exceptionally well-written espionage thriller with a number of un-predictable twist and turns that will leave the reader turning those pages well in to the night to discover what happens to these wonderfully strong, well-developed and likable characters’

About the author:

Yolanda De Iuliis was born in North Ayrshire, Scotland, in 1985. She grew up with an Italian/Irish background which soon led to an awareness of identity confusion within herself. From the age of 20 she left the countryside to explore not only city life but to encounter the other side of the world and for over ten years has been travelling to every continent to gain as much knowledge and experience as possible. After ten years of writing and collecting her autobiographical poetry she published Underneath my Soul (2015) which shows her growing from adolescence to adulthood using only poetry as a means of telling her story.

De Iuliis resides in her home town of Irvine, Ayrshire, for the time being and her current academic venture is Classical Studies combined with Modern Greek. French and Greek philosophies have also been studied and observed to motivate her mind in producing different thoughts and ideas. Her passion to write and provide an insight for others is not only her mission but her reason to exist.

Hi Catherine,

Thank you for inviting me to your blog and allowing me to tell you all about my book 🙂

“We must conquer our own mind before delving into other minds”

Tuesday 9th December 2014

The start of something that I did not realise would be a one year project and journey.

During this time in 2014 I was going through some personal struggles, troubles and upheavals.  My mind set was not the strongest or the most focused it could have been and has been in the past.  Working real hard in a job which never fulfilled me, trying my very best at university with what seemed to be no hope in passing and barely paying my bills for a place I did not own.  It was a lonely time full of change and I was disappointed with the way my life was going, it seemed out of control and I could not bare this feeling anymore.  I wanted and needed things to change therefore I started to think of the change and wrote it down.  I began to write every day with whatever I was feeling, to talk to someone and to have a friend always in my mind.  Something strange started to happen whilst writing, I began to self reflect in every matter of life and my surroundings. I learned quickly that these surroundings made me who I am and pushed these thoughts into my soul.  I didn’t want to be inspired, I wanted to be the one to inspire others therefore I started to teach myself on how I could teach others by helping them through their struggles.

The first job was to help myself therefore in The Memoirs of ‘I’ (part 1- the first 6 months) is important for the reader to understand my struggles, thoughts, ideas and crazy mind.  The reader is my therapist plus my best friend and with this help brings me to write (part 2 – the last 6 months) which in turn helps the reader through their own struggles.  I give advice and reflect on matters differently and ask them questions.  I propose them to think about their own world in a way that they may never have wondered before.

I speak of matters which are sometimes ignored by the masses in regards to religion, politics, slavery, life, existence, aliens, spirits, gods, travels, poverty and every other wonder you could imagine! The purpose – To open ones mind and bring out the child within them and the sensible adult which is all in us but we push away because of different circumstances.

Writing every day was a struggle, not because I had nothing to speak about… but due to the fact that I was thinking and analysing what most of us hide behind.  I needed to push through and do it though as I would never learn about myself and which path I wanted to head down.  I don’t preach to know all the answers, but I question all to try to find some answers.  I have given the reader some blank pages to write down their own thoughts, feelings and ideas which may have occurred whilst reading my mind.

The Memoirs of ‘I’ has been one experiment in which I will never forget and I will try to remember my own advices to bring a better smile to my world and yours.

“To sought out solace within yourself is the most difficult challenge and is quickly ignored by many, it can only be achieved when you find truth within oneself”

“Stop following the con artists, instead become the greatest and brightest artist ever to exist and let others follow your light instead”

The Memoirs of ‘I’ by Yolanda De Iuliis

To make one think is to change a generation, to build one thought is to grow a better world.

In The Memoirs of ‘I’, De Iuliis covers the years 2014 to 2015, providing a daily encounter with her writings, visions, dreams and thoughts, allowing you to see the world from a different perspective. Philosophical and soulful, these memoirs offer an account of a character struggling to self reflect on a daily basis, presenting a wonderful insight into the mind of a thinker.

This is a book that should be read by anyone who wishes to see through another’s eyes, or by those who want to look anew at the simple and extreme thoughts lying behind our existence.

My Thoughts:

Firstly, I would like to thank Yolanda for contacting me and writing a guest post for my readers.  I really look forward to reading Yolanda’s memoirs and will be following up with an honest review of her work in the near future as I am currently closed for review submissions until January next year.

Forgotten Sin (Avenging Fate Book 1) By Brian Hershey

41wKvzQx0jL._SY346_

“Every once in a while I stumble across a book that quite literally blows me away in every sense of the word. Forgotten Sin by Brian Hershey is a fast-paced thriller that is stark and harrowing, with a troubled protagonist looking to escape her horrible past that is magnified with a phenomenal evil she has little control over.” https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

Doctor Mya Bishop has a well-established career at the University of Cambridge as a lecturer on medieval mythology and a very promising future ahead of her, but she is plagued with a harrowing secret from her past and cursed with lycanthrope, where she has the ability to shape shift into a wolf. Mya is in fact over two-hundred years old and successfully manages to hide her secret identity from the world, but she is also desperate to be free from her curse and seeks the help from an animal specialist, Marcus Holland, who Mya offers a substantial amount of money to come and observe her in her animal form.  Initially Marcus is disturbed to learn what Mya is and is reluctant to stay until he has a change of heart and decides to try and find a cure as everything he witnesses with Mya´s wolf form defies all logic.  After an experiment goes horribly wrong Mya´s real identity is discovered by a prominent member of parliament who is hell-bent on hunting her down and killing her while using his position of wealth as a means of getting tasks completed.  All of which leads to a deadly hunt where the hopes of survival on each opposing side are slim.

It’s not often I come across a book where each chapter is from the perspective of alternating characters’ and I have to say I found it highly immersing and a refreshing change to some of the werewolf fiction I have read before. I expect an exciting sequel awaiting this female heroine.

Disclosure: I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Dollar Signs: Texas Lady Lawyer vs Boots King: By Manning Wolfe

index

In Manning Wolfe’s debut novel a tough female business attorney, Merit Bridges goes after a corrupt organisation (Nixon Outdoor Advertising) and a notorious leasing agent (Boots King) who are threatening one of her clients in a property dispute.

The story starts with a bang as one of Merits client’s burns down a billboard in a neighbouring property dispute and unintentionally kills a homeless guy as the fire spreads, resulting in manslaughter.  Merit Bridges and her team fight against the clock to collect enough evidence against Nixon Outdoor Advertising, who sell billboards, but are hiding the legal clauses that will affect ownership.

Boots King, a hired gun is sent into stop Merit and her team in their tracks and won’t stop until his mission is completed, all of which results in a major legal battle that puts Merits life in severe danger.

If you are a fan of legal thrillers that feature a strong-willed and smart female heroine who fights for justice and the underdog, then I highly recommend you read this book.

A Promising Thriller with an Engaging Premise

What Goes Around

By Helen Donovan

What Goes Around is a promising thriller with an engaging premise, a likable heroine and a clever combination of characters that you can care about despite their fundamental flaws.”  https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

The story follows main protagonist Phoebe, a recent college graduate who scores a position as a researcher at the Chicago Chronicle.  Phoebe promises herself two things with her first pay check, first to treat her mom to a special dinner and the second to follow her heart and hire a detective to uncover her roots on her journey of self-discovery.  Phoebe is initially elated when the detective discovers two living relatives and envisions a wonderful reunion and jubilant future…

However, events take more of a sinister turn when Phoebe discovers she has a sister who is a suspected murder and is also the granddaughter of a convicted murder and is dragged into a world of murder, deceit and greed.

Author Helen Donovan successfully manages to combine a mixture of mystery and suspense all in one go.  This is a taunt, gripping, thriller; make no mistake and it leaves little to the imagination as the pages are turned.

I’d be interested in reading a sequel to this book and would definitely recommend it to my readers and friends.

The Brigstone Man By Anne Hammerton

51RQWQ8oT9L._SX334_BO1,204,203,200_

“The story is slow to gather momentum but rises to an unexpected rousing finale with a few astonishing twists that I didn’t see coming.” https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

The Brigstone Man follows main protagonist, Sally Wincott, a thirty something career woman who is forced into hiding when her father, a well-known anthropologist is murdered after discovering something of prodigious historical and religious significance. Sally lives in fear that the men who murdered her father and his team are trying to find her and kill her for the information her father gave to her in his papyrus about the Brigstone find. However, regardless of the threat and disruption it has caused her over the last eight months she is determined to delve into the mysterious secret by travelling to various parts of the world only to discover that she is the only living person remaining that knows the life-changing discovery.

Overall, I found the story to be engaging and full of mystery and I look forward to reading more of Hammerton´s work in the near future. The only reason I cannot give this book a five-star rating is I felt some of the dialogue was forced and a little too formal. With regards to the writing style I found it pretty impressive, despite a few ´tell´ rather than ´show´ scenarios which could have been mastered better.

Calhoun: Sacrifice By Joe Mansour

41DUuaCw4QL._SX353_BO1,204,203,200_

“Calhoun: Sacrifice is a taut, fast-paced action thriller that marks the beginning of a promising mystery series, and is proof that a flawed protagonist can still earn sympathy.” https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

The story follows main protagonist, James Calhoun, who was once a solider until an IED attack tears his life apart. He is now divorced and down on his luck, as he has to rely on disability benefits to get by and attend anger management classes to calm his ferocious temper and bitterness. His only real solace is the weekly visit to his daughter who he treasures with all his heart.

The story opens with a brutal murder and a disturbing phone call from James ex-wife who informs him that her husband has been killed and their daughter’s life is now in the hands of a religious cult who want to use her as a sacrifice to resurrect a Dark God, unless James can find the cult a replacement girl in just three days time. Faced with a number of deep and disturbing moral questions, James in forced from one deadly situation to the next, almost simultaneously and finds himself caught up in an unrelenting game of life and death.

One or two words I would use to describe this book are, mysterious and unsettling. Mansour manages to build influential narratives with a number of well-developed characters ‘along with a relentlessly chilling plot.

Leech: By Robb Neumann

418Z3rh+r9L._SX311_BO1,204,203,200_

“Leech is a macabre, thought-provoking and beautifully frightening tale that pulls you in and takes you far away from what you know and subliminally sweeps you along challenging your sub-conscious with its towering span of incredible storytelling.” https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

The story is narrated by a male protagonist who is plagued by insomnia and is looking for someone to share his lonely existence with. He meets Lillian in a drug store and they soon become friends, while sharing a strange intimacy together that seems to suit them both for a short time until Lillian changes the relationship dynamics with an offer, then a threat. He soon becomes what Lillian is, as she gives him mortality. He sacrifices his humanity to be with her, even when he doesn’t really understand what his life will be like with her. The transition to love, to distrust, from admiration to hate takes him on a journey across the Atlantic to South Eastern Europe where he fights a battle between absolution and vengeance as he wants to stop Lillian from hurting anyone else when she shows him a truth that creates even more questions and concerns to the value he places on human life.

There are so many words I could use to describe this book as I met a mixture of emotions while reading it. Mysterious and unsettling are just a few words that come to mind. Original, atmospheric and brilliant are understatements. Yet, these are the only words I can use to describe this well-written novel of darkness and beauty.

The Thief and the Sacrifice: By Kevin. C Bennett

index

“The Thief and the Sacrifice is a fast-paced fantasy adventure that transports readers back and forth to some fascinating worlds, where creatures are alien, giants are among giants and humans have the ability to change their forms.” https://walkerputsche.wordpress.com/

The story begins when G.I. Floyd Sandburg is left stranded in a cave after his capture from the Nazis in Afghanistan during WWII. Sometime after his capture Floyd discovers an ancient pen sized artefact that has the power to help him escape and transport him to place to place, location to location and time zone to time zone. Floyd finds himself in a struggle that has been in place since evolution and his only chances of survival are to avoid capture as the ongoing threat of a horrifying death awaits him if he fails to save Earth and his own soul in time as he questions what will be required of him in the coming days? Unaware that his entire salvation lies within the artefact and his choices will have considerable consequences of a theological magnitude.

Bennett successfully weaves two unique tales together that will give the reader a real insight into what a person with good morals may do when they are given too much power. The other tale gives the reader some idea of what the world may have been like before the deluge of Genesis. I would definitely recommend this book to fans of Sci-fi and fantasy, and to anyone who enjoys a highly imaginative story with strong characters, places and events that’s rooted in reality, theology and human nature.
